Bangkok: Floating Market

One of the notable sites in Bangkok is the floating market. The Thais were able to sustain and retain this attraction despite the change into modernity. This preserved tradition has been serving as a cultural activity for tourist for years.

Just like what you see in postcards, the floating market is a unique shopping place where vendors and customers exchange goods in paddle boats. It’s full of life and color that are truly Thai. You will encounter a lot of fruit and vegetable vendors that sell home grown produce. The old ladies wearing the traditional Thai hats usually man the boats. There are food vendors who prepare their meal on the spot as well. It’s interesting how they manage to make all of their equipment fit into that little space. There are sweet and savory snacks available to satisfy your Thai food cravings. Vendors selling souvenirs such as shirts and trinkets are ample too since this is now operating mainly as a tourist attraction.

If you have more time to spare, I suggest taking the longtail speed boat in getting thru the market. That way, you will get a better appreciation of the local community. The ride will only take a few minutes but this is enough to give you a glimpse of how the locals live in the canal area.

The floating market is still worth a visit for first time tourists. It’s a nice break from all the city shopping and a good cultural photo opportunity too.
